Editor,
Just like with many working parents, we are placing two lenses on our Measure T vote. We care about what we are leaving for our children and how we use what little space and resources we have to build a sustainable future. As well, from a business perspective, it’s important for me to see that we are maximizing the benefit of our decisions and investments for our community.
For me, Measure T represents a thoughtful, balanced approach to making sure San Mateo grows in a way that benefits everyone — without sacrificing what makes this community special.
Our city is facing increasing pressure to provide housing, but unlike places like Texas, we have nowhere left to expand outward. Measure T ensures that new housing with more density is integrated thoughtfully, especially where we already have transit and services, which reduces traffic and helps lower emissions compared to forcing everyone to drive if those homes were built deep in single family neighborhoods. It’s a solution that takes our environmental responsibilities seriously, while also creating the housing that we have to.
I believe in making the best use of the limited space we have. We need to prioritize smart, sustainable development that meets our current needs without compromising the future. By supporting Measure T, we can ensure that San Mateo remains a place where people of all income levels can live, work and thrive — while also reducing our environmental footprint.
