San Mateo Measure T

Editor,

I am voting for San Mateo Measure T, as it is a major positive step forward in addressing the future of San Mateo.

It’s a good compromise that completes the General Plan 2040 process that has been underway for six years (yes, you read that right — a six-year process). It involved numerous outreach efforts to the community, massive numbers of studies and input from a wide range of interested parties (including me). There were huge issues that were strenuously debated on how to meet the need for more affordable housing and have a more sustainable community. In the end the city staff developed, and the City Council unanimously approved, a compromised approach to address these issues in a realistic and positive way. No one got everything they wanted but there were significant wins for all the major participants. This is the nature of democracy.

And local leaders like Kevin Mullin, Diane Papan and Jerry Hill endorse it. So, rather than continuing to debate these issues while the actual work to improve our city is stalled, let’s move forward together and pass Measure T.
