Thoughtful "letter to the editor" on why "Yes" on Measure T in San Mateo Daily Journal

LTE to San Mateo Daily Journal

Sometimes, it's helpful to hear why people are choosing to support a ballot measure or cause. Below is what San Mateo resident Yen Pang shares with the San Mateo Daily Journal on why she is voting Yes on Measure T: Editor,

I’ve read the opinions on why people are telling others not to vote yes on Measure T, but I thought I’d share why I will be voting yes on Measure T.

I’ve been a San Mateo resident for nearly 20 years and am raising my child here.

Our family is multiethnic. We are a mix of the world spanning four continents, expressed in three people.

I love the diversity of San Mateo. It’s one of the reasons why it’s home, but people need to be able to afford to live here if we want to maintain socioeconomic diversity. Too many of my wonderful friends have had to move away! If I’m lucky, they are in East Bay. But mostly, they are much further in So Cal or other states or countries. They had strong incomes here but couldn’t afford to stay. All of them would have chosen to stay if they could, and they would have only added to our community’s richness.

I support our local small businesses. I’m walking distance to downtown San Mateo and many of my favorite restaurants and shops have had to close over the years because they don’t have enough traffic. More people living downtown will support a regular stream of foot traffic and is an obvious key missing piece to a healthy downtown for the largest city in the county.

Measure T will also mean more taxes collected for local government and schools, vote yes on Measure T.

We want to thank Ms. Pang for putting herself out there, as we all know too many people make things personal and about individuals instead of staying on topics and facts.

Most importantly, we think it's important to say early and often that we do not under any circumstance condone doxxing or harassment of any sort. Please, let's keep this about facts. At the end of the day, we are all still each others' neighbors.
